Playing It Safe This Summer

In Southern California, it’s hard not to look forward to carefree summer days with friends and family, but are you prepared for some of the unexpected mishaps that can happen? Below are a few safety tips MemorialCare Medical Group wants you to consider.

Avoid sunburn: Use sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection/SPF of 30+ Note: Stay out of the sun when rays are strongest (10 am to 2 pm)
0-6 months: Keep out of the sun. Do not use sunscreen on infants
under 6 months.

6-12 months: Baby sunscreen is OK.

Swimming pool safety
• Never let children near the pool unsupervised
• Learn CPR
• Keep a phone nearby
• Enforce pool rules: no running • no diving • no glass

Swimmer's ear
To help prevent, dry the outside part of the ears after being in the water. Pain is the earliest symptom and you may see drainage from the ear(s) at some point.

Food poisoning
• Use an antibacterial hand gel and wash hands throughout the day
• Keep cold food at a temperature of less than 40°F
• Refrigerate all food within the first hour of serving

Stay hydrated
Drink eight, 8-ounce glasses of water, each day (or one glass per hour).
